Do you have a headache on the front, top or the side of your head, and what can you do about it?
Studies have shown that stimulation of active trigger points with massage therapy can be helpful in relieving frequent tension headaches. Headaches are often caused by muscles with small knots that are called trigger points.
How are these small knots formed?
There are various causes that are directly related to stress, poor posture, physical repetitive movements or injury.
The suboccipital muscle group in the back of the neck have trigger points that are the most common cause of tension headaches. These suboccipital muscles help to balance and hold your head up.
These trigger points in the back of the head in this suboccipital muscle group are known to be contributors of tension headaches.
Also there are jaw muscles (masseter muscle / facial muscle) that also have trigger points that can cause headaches.
Massaging the neck and shoulder area (suboccipital muscles) can help relax the muscle tissues by breaking up any adhesions for which the channel of pain radiates causing your splitting headache.
Headaches should not be avoided, see your doctor if they get severe. However, massage therapy has been noted to bring relief for both tension headaches and migraine headaches.
Keep in mind, that not all symptoms of headaches are recommended for the application of massage therapy. Consult your doctor first.
