Specifically the Piriformis muscle,
There is a stretch test you can do.
Keeping your gluteal (buttock) muscles stretched out and at a healthy length will prevent and aid back and leg pain. It can, also, aid hip joint and low back joint (sacroiliac joint) pain.”
So What Do I Do? You Ask?
Firstly, have an RMT give you this lesson to avoid common errors in performing the exam and for interpreting the assessment and pain.
And for a more thorough examination, you require the RMT to advise you of your bodies positioning / angle and to place one hand on the hip to stabilize the joint. The other hand should be placed on the patient’s knee to apply pressure on it.

Sit down on a sturdy surface or chair and sit up straight with your shoulders pulled to the ground and your shoulders back. Place your right ankle on your left knee in a relaxed position. Take a look at the level of both of your knees.
If the knee (of the leg you’ve lifted) is higher than your other one (of the leg left on the ground) then your gluteal muscles on the lifted leg side are too short.
Carefully, try leaning forward to feel the muscles stretch.
Test both sides and see if one side is tighter/shorter than the other.
If pain or tightness is present, the test is positive.
Stop any exercise or treatment that increases your pain!
