General STRETCHING 101
Remember…muscles behave like cheese….so ALWAYS WARM UP BEFORE STRETCHING (this important step prevents injuries!)
Use anything that is safe, including a hot shower / bath, heat pack, and / or a few minutes of movement/exercise.
DO NOT OVER-STRETCH…
Hold the stretch when you meet the body’s natural resistance. Forcing more of a stretch before your body is ready can lead to injury.
15-30 SECOND HOLDINGS during stretching is standard. Longer holdings provide longer lasting results. *** Stretching longer does not mean stretching harder!***
Stretch BOTH SIDES….if you require stretching mostly on the left of your neck, for example, you need to BALANCE OUT and stretch the other side too!
DAILY or 2x DAILY allows the stretch to really help RESET YOUR MUSCLE LENGTH.
General use of our muscles at work and home/play, gradually shorten our muscles. It’s when the muscles get so short that they no longer have any place to go but to overlap on itself. This piling of muscles fibers creates the “knots”, headaches and spasms we’re trying to prevent.
OUR MUSCLES BEHAVE BEST WHEN WARM AND LONG…
so RESET RESET RESET before your day begins and after it ends (before bed)!
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY…
Rushing your body into positions and forcing results will only make your body fight you. CHANGES TAKE TIME TO DEVELOP… with daily stretching… results can be seen within 1-3 weeks.
DONT GIVE UP TOO SOON!
